Anyone you ask would tell you that Architects do lots of drawings. Yes this is true but the misconception here is that most people really do think that is all we do – just drawings. This is what i want to clarify in this post. We do a whole lot more than just draw. So what do Architects do?
    architectsjournal.co.uk
According to wikipedia, An architect is a person who plans, designs, and oversees the construction of buildings. To practice architecture means to provide services in connection with the design and construction of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings, that have as their principal purpose human occupancy or use. Etymologically, architect derives from the Latin architectus, which derives from the Greek (arkhi-, chief + tekton, builder), i.e., chief builder
The role of the architect is simply to turn your vision into a reality. To be able to achieve this to the fullest, the architects role can’t end in just producing drawings. I would simply list out other roles of an architect apart from producing drawings.
    • Site selection – If you do not have a site yet for that dream project, your Architect can help you select a perfect site.
    • Interiors
    • Restore old buildings (Renovations)
    • Update old buildings (Upgrade/Face lift)
    • Cost analysis
    • Color selection
    • Flooring selection
    • Lighting selection
    • Help client select, negotiate and manage all contractors
    • Find a skilled craftsman
    • Construction administration
    • Etc
Oh yes, the list could still go on and on. Sincerely speaking, the role of the Modern Architect is dwindling to just design and drawing. There are a few Architects who are responsible for this misconception. We also have other industries who are increasingly trying to muscle in on traditional architecture turf. Increasingly vertically integrated firms in the spaces of engineering contract building and building services are going after project management work, as are specialist project managers. Building designers and graphic designers are increasingly trying to muscle in on the action in design concept. Clients, too, are increasingly shifting preference toward vertically integrated service providers and opting to involve more specialists in increasingly complex projects.
I am already deviating from the topic so i would stop here. Next time you see and Architect, have it in mind that he/she does more than just drawings.
